Finale uit Sinfonia Domestica – Richard Strauss
€285,00
In this work, Strauss paints everyday life—his own, that of his wife Pauline, and their young son Franz—with rich orchestral colours. Father, mother, and child are each given their own musical theme, with a gently rocking oboe d’amore representing the baby Franz. The piece unfolds as a musical narrative of scenes from family life, ranging from quiet moments to lively discussions, from childlike antics to the serene calm of evening: a symphonic portrait filled with love, humour, tenderness, and a touch of irony. It is an ode to ordinary life which, in Strauss’s hands, sounds anything but ordinary.
Climax
The final movement, Finale, forms the climax of this symphonic domestic tale. Erik Somers arranged this concluding movement especially for Harmonie St. Michaël of Thorn. After a nocturnal serenity, morning breaks forth with an energetic fugue—a contrapuntal masterpiece in which Strauss virtuously weaves together the themes of father, mother, and child from the earlier movements. It is as if the entire family is speaking at once, each with its own voice, yet in harmony. The music builds to a jubilant climax in which family life is celebrated as something grand and exalted. The child’s themes return in full glory, and Strauss concludes with a monumental coda that sounds like a musical embrace: warm, powerful, and full of life.
